It’s not just some "corny new age thing", it is a practice that can change your attitude, direction, and life experience. It’s simple and takes no more than 5 minutes of your day. The more you do it, the more it shifts your perspective and the quality of your days.
There is no “right way” to practice gratitude. Find the one that works for you and try it out. Some like to journal, starting with 5 things they are grateful for, growing it to 10 and over time that list will continue grow. Others will say their “list” out loud with their hand over their heart, others, just say it silently to themselves. Whatever technique works for you, start practicing it. I love that word, practice. It doesn’t mean “I am a master of it” it means “I am practicing with the intention of getting better at it.” So play with it, find what works and utilize it daily.
Now the next question may be, especially if you are facing hard adversities, "What do I have to be grateful for?". Start small and work your way up. “I am grateful for the sunshine this morning. I am grateful for my warm bed. I am grateful for my cup of coffee. I am grateful for . . . .”
After doing this for 3 days, 5 days, a week you’ll start looking for things to add to your list each day. You’ll see things that bring you joy and hope, that you didn’t see before. This is not a magic shortcut to happiness, but it is a proven technique to shift from a perspective of need and lack to one of gratitude and abundance.
As an example, my drive to work was excruciating to me. The traffic, the mindless (and distracted)
people on the road, the distance, and the place I was going to wasn’t exactly my view of nirvana. So, I started moving my attention from all the things that irritated me to the things I found joy in. Saying out loud, “I am grateful for . . . “and going through my list, then adding to it as thing popped in my head. It completely changed my attitude about the commute and my day ahead.
